Background-
Arthur Szyk (June 3, 1894 – September 13, 1951)(PRONOUNCED SHICK) was a Polish-born Jewish artist who worked primarily as a book illustrator and political artist throughout his career. From 1921, he lived and created his works mainly in France and Poland, and in 1937 he moved to the United Kingdom. In 1940, he settled permanently in the United States, where he was granted American citizenship in 1948.
Even before moving to America Szyk celebrated American liberty in his art. Other prominent themes in his work were his Jewish heritage and his strong hostility to the Axis powers in World War II. Rejecting modernism in art, Szyk drew inspiration from medieval and Renaissance styles of painting. Very popular in his lifetime, Szyk has recently been "re-discovered", with major exhibitions in Polish and other European cities, and at the Library of Congress, US National Holocaust Museum, and many other US museums.
